Application Overview

In order to be considered for funding, all applicants must submit the following materials. Application materials listed below are also available for download. 

All applicants must complete the proposal form template. A fully completed form, including all signatures, should be at the front of the application. The form is inclusive of the following elements:

  • Project Information

  • Previous Applications

  • Abstract

  • Collaborations (with key partners at Penn, in China, and elsewhere)

  • Demonstrated Use of the Penn Wharton China Center

  • Timeline

  • Conflict of Interest Statement

  • PWCC Consultation (Recommended)

  • Signatures*

*Deans, department chairs (if applicable), and a senior business administrator of your school/center must sign the Penn CREF proposal form.

The narrative is limited to eight pages and should include the following elements:

  • Background/Statement of Need

  • Project Design and Methodology

  • Key Objectives and Outcomes

  • Potential Impact

  • Key Activities

  • Outputs and Sustainability

Throughout the narrative, please highlight your planned use of the Penn Wharton China Center, as well as any expected partners and/or collaborating institution from China, Penn, or other locations.

Using the Penn CREF budget template, applicants must provide a detailed breakdown of the costs by year, detailing the total funds requested and the individual line items where you expect those funds to be spent along with any calculations you used to arrive at the amounts.

The budget form should include all project costs. An example of an acceptable budget is available upon request. Please contact global@upenn.edu with any questions or for a copy of the sample budget.

When preparing your budget, please refer to the budget guidelines to ensure that all proposed project costs are supported.

In addition, please briefly describe how funds will be allocated and how the funds will allow you to succeed in achieving your objectives. Applicant must indicate whether he or she has secured funds from other sources, for instance, from their School, other internal departments and offices, or from external organizations.  In the budget narrative, please indicate the source and amount of the external funds.

Biosketches. Biosketches for all key personnel, including faculty and collaborators, should be included in the application.

Letters of Support.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit letters of support from collaborators, if available.

Submission Guidelines

Please ensure that all items listed in the checklist are completed and submitted with your application. Failure to provide all materials at the time of submission will delay the review process and may jeopardize the applicant’s chance of receiving funds.

A completed application should be submitted as a PDF file via email to the Global Engagement account at global@upenn.edu. Please also submit your budget in an excel file. The name of the PDF document and the excel file must begin with the last name of the proposed principal investigator. The final and complete application must be received by the due date.
