Missed the Annual Call for Proposals?

For the sake of weighing the merits of different proposals against one another, we prioritize proposals submitted during our annual application period. But we also understand that opportunities arise year-round, so we've developed the GEF Investigator-Initiated Program through which we fund a select number of faculty and staff proposals throughout the rest of the calendar year (April - December).

For more information about the GEF Investigator-Initiated Program and detailed submission instructions, please contact Penn Global at global@upenn.edu

Review Process

All proposals to the GEF Annual Program will be reviewed on a timely basis by the Penn Global team and members of a committee of reviewers drawn from the University community.

After considering the proposal and feedback from reviewers, members from the Penn Global team will make recommendations regarding the dispersal of funds from the Penn Global Engagement Fund.

Evaluation Criteria

All applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  1. Does the proposal (including the budget) meet the fund requirements?

  2. Does the proposal meet most, if not all, of the primary goals of the fund, including:

    • Catalyzing entrepreneurial research and partnerships in a global context. Specifically, Penn Global seeks to increase global activity and to promote research and engagement on the part of Penn faculty around the world by providing funding for projects that will lead to additional external funding and continue beyond the scope of the Global Engagement Fund

    • Developing new insight on pressing global issues in key countries/regions of the world and important global trends

    • Promoting collaboration and the integration of knowledge across Schools and disciplines.

  3. Does the principal investigator(s) offer the most cost-effective and timely option?

  4. Does the principal investigator(s) offer a plan for sustained activity beyond the scope and limit of the proposed project period?
