On Friday, May 17, just a few short days before the rush of Commencement overtook Penn’s campus in West Philadelphia, students, family members, faculty, and administrators gathered together at the Perry World House to celebrate the graduating international students of the Class of 2019. Attendees shared in spirited conversation and food from across the world.

Dr. Rudie Altamirano, Director of International Student & Scholar Services, recognized graduating seniors Alex Yang, James Goh, and Neeraj Chandrasekar for their leadership roles in international student groups throughout their Penn careers. Ezekiel Emanuel, Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, then recognized the finalists for the Penn Global Student Citizenship Award, given annually to a graduating international undergraduate and graduate student who exemplify a spirit of global citizenship at Penn, engaging the international student community at Penn and the exhibiting a sustained commitment to global enrichment. This year’s undergraduate Citizenship Award winner was Liqhwa Ncube. James Goh and Adamseged Abebe were runners up. Fang-Hsuan Macy Chang was recognized as the graduate student award winner, with Ángeles Ortega Luque and Christina Cheung receiving plaudits as runners up.

This year, 294 international undergraduate and 1,155 graduate students from 90 different countries completed their studies at Penn. Among their ranks were winners of the President’s Engagement Prize; a Rhodes Scholar; leaders of clubs, activities, student government, and sports teams – Penn’s loss in graduating them is very much the world’s gain. Congratulations to the Class of 2019!
