Today, Penn's relationship with China is strong, and continues to grow. As of April 2018, Penn has over 20 international partnerships with Chinese institutions. Faculty from all of Penn's 12 Schools have reported over 350 research projects and instructional activities in China. And since 2011, 1,400 Penn students have studied abroad on traditional and short-terms programs in China.
With interactions dating back to 1823, engagement between Penn and China predates the founding of many American universities. This ongoing exchange of ideas and collaborative advancement of knowledge has shaped thought, theory, and practice across the disciplines in America, China, and around the world for nearly two hundred years.
To ensure its relationship with China continues to grow and to strengthen its leadership on research and engagement with China, the University of Pennsylvania has established research centers focused on China and East Asia. Penn currently has over 20 international partnerships with Chinese institutions, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, with whom Penn first entered into an agreement in 1980. Faculty from all of Penn's 12 schools have reported over 350 research projects and instructional activities in China, including many of the project presented at the annual Penn China Research Symposium.
