The program supports Penn scholar travel to the American University in Cairo and the greater Middle East region that will:

  • Strengthen existing equitable institutional and faculty-to-faculty relationships with Middle Eastern partners, including at the American University in Cairo (AUC).
  • Foster the creation of new partnerships, with a goal of expanding opportunities for research and academic exchange.
  • Promote the interdisciplinary scholarship, pedagogy, and engagement of the Middle East by supporting faculty and affiliates with established expertise or those seeking to deepen their academic specialization in the field.

Grants cover travel-related costs, including but not limited to flights and other transportation, lodging, meals, and incidentals.

Penn scholars’ short-term residency at AUC is the keystone of the Middle East Knowledge Exchange Fund, with all Awardees leveraging partnerships at AUC towards in-person academic research and/or exchange on its campus.
