PGS: Caves, Cathedrals, and Curiosities: Unearthing Stories on the Chemin des Dames in France

Owen Phillips is a sophomore from Boonville, Indiana studying Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. At the end of this semester, he is traveling to the French countryside to explore the Chemin des Dames – a stretch of the Western Front where some of WWI’s most brutal fighting unfolded. When seen around Penn, Owen is likely on his way to class at McNeil, a student government meeting, Pottruck, or his evening walk with friends at the Woodland Cemetery. Owen is most passionate about school systems and how they serve students; he hopes to work in education policy after graduation.

During his upcoming journey to France, he can’t wait to:

  • See Christian Lapie’s memorial to the Tirailleurs Sénégalais
  • Use his French with native speakers
  • Meet Guy Marival, the local expert on the Chemin des Dames
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the battlefield as a place where history is still present in the land
  • Take lots of Instagram-worthy film photo
