My Experience Abroad

Travelling abroad to two different countries on the opposite side of the world through the Nursing school was an enriching experience that dissolved the preconceived notions I had about the limitations of the Nursing curriculum. Before travelling abroad, I thought it to be nearly impossible to break away from the structure demands of the Nursing curriculum. However, participating in not one, but two global opportunities, revealed the flexibility within Nursing and the value of experiential learning.

In Ghana, I had the privilege of partaking in a three day medical mission in a rural community, whilst rotating through three differently resourced clinical sites throughout the program. This experience deepened my understanding of healthcare disparities and their impact on populations. Coming from a Ghanaian background, this experience was especially meaningful as it strengthened my long term goal of returning to my country to contribute to equitable healthcare delivery.

Across the world in Australia, I tackled a vastly different healthcare system whilst immersing myself in a culture that intentionally honors in Aboriginal communities. This experience deepened my perspective on culturally competent care. I also had the opportunity to travel to Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand, each of which offered unique cultural experiences that enhanced my worldview.

As an aspiring nurse, I believe it is very important to explore and understand cultures outside of my home because I am preparing to serve diverse populations. With all of these global experiences, I am able to connect with patients from different backgrounds using a piece of what I have learned from every country.
