My Experience Abroad
As a History and Spanish double major, the opportunities I’ve been able to participate in through Penn Abroad have been truly life changing and enriched my educational experience at Penn. It has been a lifelong goal of mine to become fluent in Spanish and my experiences through GRIP and Study Abroad have helped me improve my Spanish and deepened my global awareness. In Buenos Aires, I lived in a homestay where I spoke only Spanish with my host-mom. I also interned for an economic research organization where I completed research about the Argentine dictatorship in the 1970s using primary sources entirely in Spanish. In Spring 2026, I studied in Barcelona Spain through the CASA program which emphasizes immersion. While studying in Barcelona, I volunteered in a local Catalan and Spanish elementary school for six hours a week which was personal enriching and helped improve my conversational skills. Finally, I hope to work in a career in foreign policy and these experiences, including the PGS I participated in Brazil, have reinforced my desire to learn more about the world around me and from people of all different backgrounds.
Other Highlights
- First, going to the Inhotim outdoor art museum in Minas Gerais Brazil which was breathtaking and the most amazing outdoor art museum I have ever been to.
- Second, reading and working with original previously untouched documents during my internship in historical economic research in Buenos Aires.
- Third, volunteering with eight year olds in their PE classes in Barcelona, Spain and teaching them how to play basketball.
- Fourth, getting to go to Feria de Sevilla in May during my study abroad in Barcelona and seeing the beautiful gowns and listening to Flamenco.
- Fifth, hiking around glacial lakes in Bariloche Patagonia with my new friends from the GRIP program in Buenos Aires Argentina.
