PGS: Travel to China

Program Abroad:

  • Penn Global Seminars (PGS): SEAS Global Immersion, Travel to China

Ask me about...

  • Being a College student on a SEAS program

  • Asking questions from a different mindset than my peers

My Experience Abroad:

I am an International Relations major - an incredibly interdisciplinary field - and I went abroad as part of a course offered through SEAS that studied the growth of the technology sector in China. As someone who is incredibly interested in Chinese politics and foreign policy, this experience allowed me to discover a whole new side of the industry, innovation, and development that is not only important in engineering but also as a tool of political influence.

Other Highlights:

  • Traveling to China (which I had done four times before) but in a completely new light, surrounded by completely new people with completely new objectives and viewpoints

  • Getting to be in China while Xi Jinping abolished term limits (truly historic moment!)

  • Climbing the Great Wall rather than just taking a chairlift up

  • Bargaining for knock-off watches in markets in Beijing

  • Serving as a liaison between locals and my peers as one of the few students on the trip who spoke Mandarin Chinese
