GRIP: Remote Intern

Programs Abroad:

  • Global Research & Internship Program (GRIP - Virtual program in Summer 2021): World Medical Association in Ferney-Voltaire, France

Ask me about...

The virtual internship experience - Although my experience was virtual, and I wasn't able to fully, truly immerse myself in another country, I think the internship with the WMA is unique because you are not just working with and learning about one country. The organization is a global one and the staff themselves come from all over. You're able to learn about France, where the WMA is based, but through different lenses, and about other countries too. This opportunity is truly global and not limited to "immersion" in one country.

My Experience Abroad:

Interning at the World Medical Association (WMA) allowed me to get a glimpse into international organizations related to health. In addition to the WMA, I was able to attend meetings with other large global health players including the World Health Organization, United Nations, International Council of Nurses, and International Labour Organization. Although the WMA is an organization of and for physicians, my experience there was relevant to my future nursing career as I was able to gain insight into the ethical duties of physicians. I was also able to learn a lot about different current issues in global health and many organizations that work in the field.

Other Highlights:

  • Reviewing old WMA policies

  • Conducting research and making recommendations as to whether they should be reaffirmed, revised (and in what way), or rescinded and archived

  • Attending meetings at the WHO, UN, ILO and collaborating with other organizations such as the ICN, ICRC, and IHF

  • Daily coffee breaks with co-workers where it was encouraged to avoid talking about work
