GRIP: Intern in Australia

Program Abroad:

  • Global Research & Internship Program (GRIP): University of Sydney, Australia

Ask me about...

  • Having an internship for the first time, and doing it while abroad

  • Being in a cohort program

  • Traveling alone for the first time

  • Taking a class with regular assignments alongside my internship

My Experience Abroad:

I mainly study social sciences at Penn - specifically, economics and sociology. This means that a lot of my coursework is research-heavy, and requires me to analyze sources and write intensive papers. In Sydney, I worked on the marketing team of the University of Sydney's Faculty of Engineering. My role required a lot of research and writing, similar to my courses while at Penn. I wrote numerous articles about the students and alumni of the faculty, and had to competitively analyze the websites and the social media strategies of other engineering schools. This required me to conduct research and analyze trends to draw conclusions and make recommendations for improvement, which is the core of the social sciences.

Other Highlights:

  • Seeing an opera at the Sydney Opera House

  • Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef

  • Doing the highest bungee jump in New Zealand, and visiting the North Islands

  • Hiking in the Blue Mountains

  • Seeing (and petting) kangaroos and koalas for the first time
