Pinch Me, I Might Still Be Dreaming

If I am being honest, I chose Sydney for a very practical reason. It felt like one of those places in the world that I might not get the chance to visit again anytime soon. I also had a few friends studying in Australia, so being able to see them during my stay seemed like an added bonus. Beyond that, I did not have many expectations. I knew Sydney was famous, but I did not know what it would feel like to actually live here.

Ten days later, I can confidently say that Sydney has completely swept me off my feet.

The word “beautiful” feels almost inadequate when I think about everything I have already experienced in such a short amount of time. I arrived just in time to experience Vivid Sydney, with the city transformed by incredible lights and displays. Since then, I have visited the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, explored an aquarium and zoo, gone on a scenic hike, discovered stunning beaches, and eaten some incredible food. Somehow, all of that happened within my first ten days.

What surprised me most, however, is that it is not the tourist attractions that made me fall in love with Sydney. It is Sydney itself.

One of the first things I noticed was how clean the city is. I had never really thought about how much my surroundings influence the way I feel about a place until I arrived here. The public transport system works seamlessly, and navigating the city feels natural almost immediately. There is an ease to everyday life that is difficult to describe until you experience it yourself.

Another thing I have grown to appreciate is the city’s culture around health and fitness. A friend jokingly told me that “Sydney residents will do anything to look good while ‘naked’ at the beach,” and after spending time here, I completely understand what they meant. Whether it is people running along the coastline, surfing during weekends, or simply being active outdoors, there is an energy here that is contagious.

Coming from the fast-paced environment I experienced in the United States, I have also appreciated Sydney’s commitment to work-life balance. There is ambition here, but there is also a clear understanding that life exists outside of work. That balance has been refreshing to witness.

The two photos I chose for this post capture what Sydney already means to me. The first, taken during a hike overlooking a dramatic valley and waterfall, reminds me of the sense of adventure this city has given me. The second, looking out over the ocean, captures a quieter feeling; gratitude. Both moments left me standing still and believing I am still in an incredible dream.

The craziest part is that I have only been here for a week and a half.

Every day that I step outside, I find myself in awe all over again. There are still so many things left to see, but Sydney has already left a lasting impression on me. My time here may be short, but the connection I have developed with this city is something I know I will carry with me long after I leave.
