Spring 2022 Peer Mentors

In Spring 2022, we are launching a pilot peer mentor program and seeking past program participants to join us as we develop this new opportunity for students to support those interested in going abroad.

Why Become a Peer Mentor?

Peer mentors have the unique opportunity to utilize their experiences abroad and play an integral role in helping students navigate the decision-making process and offering support during the pre-departure stage. This is essential to the growth of Penn’s global programs and providing every Penn student with a meaningful global experience. We believe that the global opportunities we provide enable students to leave the university as more engaged global citizens. Join us in building this global community!

Aside from providing professional development and recognition to the group, Penn Abroad will also facilitate a positive and team-oriented environment. While seeking to enhance Penn’s global community, the initiatives and activities of the peer mentors also aim to develop the leadership skills of each member.

Goals & Responsibilities

Peer Mentors will play an integral role in helping students navigate the decision-making process and offer support during the pre-departure stage through conversations about common questions and concerns like budgeting, traveling, managing coursework, navigating the experience of being away from Penn and living abroad, among many other topics.

  • After participating in a training retreat at the start of the spring semester, peer mentors will offer a minimum availability of 3 weekly hours (30-minute appointment slots) for students to sign up to meet with them (online) from February 1 - April 27 (excluding spring break).
  • Peer mentors are expected to attend monthly check-in meetings from February to April and a final debrief in early May. Meals will be provided.

  • This opportunity for Spring 2022 is open to students that have traveled abroad on a Semester Abroad or through the Global Research & Internship Program, or Penn Global Seminars program.
  • Peer mentors must also serve as Penn Abroad Ambassadors and have their profile listed on the Penn Abroad website.
  • Mentors are expected to display exemplary behavior and conduct themselves in accordance with an open-minded, culturally aware, and inclusive attitude.
