On November 5, you can hear from Penn alumni and current students who have returned from fellowships abroad, including Daniel Brennan (Thouron Scholar), Angela Chen (Schwarzman Scholar), Stephen Damianos (Rhodes and Truman Scholar), Anna Drabek (Peace Corps and Boren Fellow), and Erin Hartman (Marshall Scholar), in conversation with PWH’s Global Shifts program manager Jocelyn Perry (Fulbright Public Policy Fellow and Gates Cambridge Scholar).
This event is run in partnership with the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CURF). CURF advisors will be on hand that this event to provide guidance on the various Penn processes for nomination and application for particular awards.

PANELISTS
Daniel Brennan graduated from Penn’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2020 and is a current Thouron Scholar at Oxford University reading for an MPhil in the History of War. At Penn, Daniel rowed for the varsity lightweight crew and he double majored in History and Political Science with respective concentrations in Diplomatic History and International Relations. While a Perry World House Student Fellow Daniel studied the advent of hybrid warfare, The Russo-Iranian relationship, and conflict over water scarcity. At Oxford, he plans to continue his study of international conflict and diplomacy by examining the historic evolution of strategic thought in East Asia.
Angela Chen graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 studying economics with a concentration in Health Care Management. After leaving Penn, she joined the first class of Schwarzman Scholars at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, graduating in July 2017 with a Master’s in Global Affairs. She then worked in research for two years at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and at the China Health Partnership at the Harvard School of Public Health. To date, she has published in peer-reviewed journals on topics including clinical trial design, cancer treatment outcomes, and China’s health system reform. Today, Angela is a second-year medical student at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. As part of the university’s M.D.-Ph.D. program, she will eventually also pursue a Ph.D. in Health Care Management and Economics at the Wharton School.
Stephen Damianos graduated with a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2019, where he studied political science and journalism. While at Penn, Stephen founded several refugee-focused initiatives and organizations, including Penn for Refugee Empowerment (PRE), and worked with local resettlement centers on employment practices. He additionally researched as a Perry World House Student Fellow. Stephen volunteered with refugees and asylum seekers in Athens, Greece, supporting single male asylum seekers with legal, social, and emergency aid. Upon graduating from Penn, Stephen completed a Master's in Development Studies at the University of Cambridge, and is currently pursuing a DPhil (PhD) in International Development at the University of Oxford. His research interests involve precarious livelihoods, identity negotiation, and internalized criminality amongst unaccompanied male asylum seekers. Stephen is a Rhodes Scholar and a Truman Scholar.
Anna Drabek studied International Education Development at Penn's Graduate School of Education, having been drawn to the worlds of international education and development after serving as an EFL Teacher in Benin with the Peace Corps. Towards the end of her Master’s program, she was awarded a Boren Fellowship to return to Benin and study the Bariba language more in-depth while interning at a local non-governmental education focused on gender equity and women’s rights. Anna has since changed tack to pick up new skills domestically and now works as a Program Analyst at the U.S. EPA, with plans to return to international work later in life.
Erin Hartman graduated from Penn in 2018. She earned a BSN from the School of Nursing and studied health policy as a Public Policy Research Scholar. Upon graduation, she worked at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital as an emergency department and oncology nurse and as a sexual assault forensic examiner. In Autumn of 2019, she was awarded a two-year Marshall Scholarship. As a Marshall Scholar, she has begun her studies at the University of York where she will read for a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law and Practice. Her interest is in eradicating violence against women at the intersection of health, law, and policy, with a particular focus on conflict and humanitarian settings.
MODERATOR
Jocelyn Perry is the Global Shifts Program Manager at Perry World House. She brings experience working with and advocating for displaced individuals and communities in the United States and around the world to this role with Perry World House. Prior to joining the PWH team, Jocelyn served as a Fulbright Public Policy Fellow with Malawi's Department of Refugees, working on advocacy for and development of Malawi’s Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework alongside the United Nations Refugee Agency. Her current research focuses on climate adaptation, particularly forms of governance, political organization, and participatory decision-making among displaced populations and in urban areas. She has previously worked for the Social Science Research Council’s African Peacebuilding Network, as well as in disaster response for the American Red Cross and community development with Public Narrative in Chicago. Jocelyn received her B.A. in International Relations and Hispanic Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a M.Phil. in International Relations and Politics from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar.
