Washington Brief - Future of the South China Sea

A collection of scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from Penn and elsewhere will discuss where things stand in the contested waters of the South China Sea. The discussion will include the latest military, legal, and diplomatic developments in the region as well as what the Trump administration, China, and others in the international community want in the vital South China Sea.  Current participants include:

-William Burke-White, the Inaugural Director of Perry World House and Richard Perry Professor and Professor of Law, is an expert on international law and global governance who served in the Obama Administration from 2009-2011 on the State Department Policy Planning Staff.

-Jacques deLisle, a Penn Professor of Law and Political Science, research and teaches on contemporary Chinese law and politics, including China’s engagement with the international order. He’s edited a forthcoming book on the United States, China, and international law.

-Lindsey Ford, Director of Political-Security Affairs for the Asia Society Policy Institute, served as the Senior Adviser to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs until 2015, where she managed a team of advisers providing leadership on regional strategy planning and maritime security issues, including publication of the Defense Department’s first Asia-Pacific Maritime Security Strategy.

-Mark Nevitt, Penn Law Sharswood Fellow, is a leading national security legal scholar and a former Navy aviator with operational experience in the South China Sea.

Perry World House, Penn’s global policy research center, will host the briefing at the Penn-Biden Center in Washington on the 6th floor of 101 Constitution Avenue, NW.
