Asia, Penn has established a strong foundation on which the university will continue to expand its global connections, deepen its global impact, and advance Penn’s preeminence as a global institution.

Carol Muller, Professor of Music (far left), led a Penn Global Seminar that explored issues of culture, politics, history, and heritage of four idigenous communities, including Aboriginals of Australia. Students traveled to Australia in May 2024, visiting with Aboriginal communities and meeting with local musicians and artists.

East Asia

The University of Pennsylvania’s engagement with China and East Asia is marked by a proud tradition of ‘firsts’ and a two-way exchange of talent and ideas in research, education, and service.

South Asia

Penn has a longstanding history in South Asia and strong engagement with India through research and educational programs, anchored today by the Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) and its counterpart the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India (UPIASI).

Partnership In Focus

Vingroup-Penn Alliance

Penn maintains a formal alliance with the Vingroup, Vietnam’s largest private company, to improve health care and to create new undergraduate and graduate medical training programs in Vietnam. The alliance is positioned to extend Penn’s global reach through the creation of a new Center of Regional Engagement in Southeast Asia, based in Vietnam.

Campus Initiatives

Penn actively engages with Asia-Pacific through a range of partnerships and initiatives that foster academic collaboration, research, and student exchange. 

Penn Museum Oceanian Section

The Oceanian collections of the Penn Museum include over 22,000 objects from all the major island groups of the Pacific (Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia), insular Southeast Asia, and Australia.

Penn Museum Asian Section

The Asian section at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology covers all of Asia and has a little over 25,000 objects, although only about 1% is on display at any time.
