U.S. Department of State Visa Screening and Interview Scheduling
Dear International Students and Scholars,
We want to share an important update from the U.S. Department of State (DoS) that may affect visa applications for F and J nonimmigrant classifications.
On June 18, 2025, the DoS announced enhanced screening protocols, which include reviewing visa applicants’ online presence and social media activity. Applicants may be asked to adjust the privacy settings on their social media profiles to “public” to support this process. These measures apply to both new and returning students and scholars.
While consular posts are resuming visa interview scheduling, timing may vary by location due to increased workload. Recent press releases indicate that priority is expected for students applying to institutions where international students make up less than 15% of enrollment. Since Penn’s international student population exceeds this threshold, interview delays may affect some of our students.
Key Recommendations:
- Regularly check the website of your local U.S. embassy or consulate for appointment availability.
- Submit your DS-160 form promptly if you have not done so already.
- Review your digital footprint and consider making your social media accounts public. If you have concerns, consult an experienced immigration attorney.
- Review ISSS’s guidance:
- Travel Guidance: https://global.upenn.edu/isss/home/immigration/travel/
- Visa Guidance: https://global.upenn.edu/isss/home/immigration/travel/visa/
Review before planning international travel, especially if you need a new visa for reentry.
- If you are from one of the 19 countries listed in the June 4 Presidential Proclamation and did not hold a valid visa as of June 9, 2025, you may not currently be eligible for a visa despite resumed interview scheduling.
Penn’s International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates. Please reach out to Rudie Altamirano, ISSS Executive Director at rudiea@upenn.edu with any questions.
