Biography
Marilena brings over two decades of expertise in primary education and international student advising, drawing from a rich and diverse professional background that spans multiple countries and educational systems. Originally from Greece, Marilena holds a Bachelor’s in Nursing and a degree in Nurse Anesthesia, reflecting her commitment to academic excellence and personal growth. After relocating to the United States, she graduated with honors from Drexel University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Services Administration (HSAD) and began her graduate studies in Legal Studies at Drexel Law School, which she looks forward to resuming in the near future.
Her experience in education is both broad and deep, encompassing roles as a foreign language instructor in private schools and as a Reading Interventionist at a public School District in Delaware County. Marilena’s decade-long tenure at Drexel University as Assistant Director was marked by her unwavering support of thousands of international students and scholars. She advised on immigration matters, helped students navigate complex visa regulations (including F-1 and J-1), and provided guidance on academic and cultural transitions. Throughout her career, Marilena has successfully supported over 10,000 students in overcoming immigration challenges, orchestrated cultural events, and facilitated mentorship programs, demonstrating both leadership and compassion.
Marilena is known for her strong intercultural communication and interpersonal skills, her ability to connect with students from all backgrounds, and her dedication to creating welcoming and inclusive academic environments. Her passion for serving international students is rooted in her own journey as an international student, giving her unique insight into the challenges and opportunities they face.
Currently, Marilena continues her work with international students and scholars, inspired by the University of Pennsylvania’s vision of fostering a global campus community. She is deeply invested in contributing to the holistic success of students, faculty, and staff, and is committed to advancing the university’s mission of inclusivity and global engagement.
Outside of her professional pursuits, Marilena is a devoted parent to two young children. She enjoys traveling with her family, playing board games, swimming, and cooking—cherishing every opportunity to create lasting memories together.
