As our departure for Malawi approaches, I’ve been reflecting on everything we’ve learned in our PGS so far. Over the first half of the semester, our class has explored the complexities of aging populations worldwide. At the end of each class, students hold debates over topics like pronatalist incentives, migration policies, and universal healthcare coverage. We’ve also learned about life-course approaches to the study of global aging, examined demographic trends across different regions, and discussed the ethical challenges of studying aging populations. Professor Kohler also invited many engaging guest speakers to share their perspectives on the intersection of policy, data analysis, and healthcare across different global contexts with us.

One of the highlights of the class for me so far was our group presentation from a few weeks back, where my team and I did a deep dive into Chile’s demographic history, analyzing how shifts in fertility, life expectancy, and policy decisions have shaped its aging population. Beyond class discussions, I’ve also been preparing my final research paper, which focuses on Hong Kong’s aging population. Growing up in a place with one of the world’s longest life expectancies and a rapidly aging demographic, I’ve witnessed firsthand the strains on public resources and social support systems. I’m eager to continue applying what I’ve learned in class to this research paper.

In preparation for our trip to Malawi, we are packing light in every sense: keeping luggage light for ease of mobility, choosing light-colored neutrals to stay cool and blend in on safari, and even bringing a flashlight to navigate any power outages. Balancing practicality and comfort will be key as we move between bustling villages and open landscapes. Given how much we’ll be traveling, I’ve been intentional about what to bring and careful in making sure I have all my necessary vaccinations, malaria pills, prescribed travel medication, and lots of sunscreen and bug spray. To make the most of evenings without electricity, I’ve also packed a couple of paperbacks and card games – small comforts to pass the time if the lights go out.

Looking ahead, I’m most excited about the chance to engage with Malawi’s universities and healthcare facilities, gaining insight into how the country structures its healthcare and social support systems. I’m also eager to visit Njobvu Cultural Village, where we’ll have the opportunity to observe and participate in traditional practices like basket weaving, flour pounding, and farming. Of course, I can’t wait for the safari tour of Liwonde National Park, where we can experience the natural beauty of Malawi and witness its incredible wildlife up close.

This seminar has already challenged and expanded my understanding of global aging, and I can’t wait to continue learning through firsthand experiences in Malawi. I’m looking forward to sharing reflections in the weeks to come.
