GRIP: Engineering Research in Singapore

As you embark on your upcoming research internship and time living abroad at the National University of Singapore, there are a few key things I wish I could share with you. These insights could make your experience even more enriching and fulfilling.

Firstly, living in Singapore will be an incredible adventure. Embrace the vibrant cultural diversity and spend time enjoying the tourist attractions as well as the unique differences of day-to-day life in Singapore. While the initial adjustment might be challenging in a new country, remember that stepping out of your comfort zone is where growth truly happens. Be open to trying new foods, exploring new neighborhoods, and forming meaningful connections with people from all walks of life because this is what will make or break your experience.

When it comes to your work environment, you may find yourself working independently and remotely. Even though this is a different structure from what you’ve done in the past, it's an opportunity to hone your self-discipline and time management skills. Create a dedicated workspace, establish a routine, and set clear goals for each day, especially as this will give you dedicated time for self-care, socializing, and exploring beyond campus. This independence will empower you to take ownership of your experience abroad as well as make meaningful contributions to your research lab.

Speaking of contribution, keep in mind that your value goes beyond just your technical skills. As a student from another university at the start of your academic journey, you offer a unique perspective, so don't hesitate to share your thoughts during discussions and meetings. Your professors and graduate students are mentors that will always give you constructive feedback that helps you learn in the long run.

Furthermore, approach this experience with an even more open mindset than you currently have. Embrace change and uncertainty as opportunities for growth because this will occur more often than you think. Nevertheless stay positive because every challenge you encounter will contribute to your personal and professional development, making you more resilient and adaptable in the long run, preparing you for your next adventure!

Lastly, remember that growth doesn't happen in isolation. While it is important to take time for yourself as self-care, remember that building strong relationships can lead to valuable mentorship and collaboration opportunities. These connections will not only enhance your experience but could also lead to lifelong friendships and career prospects.

In summary, your upcoming internship and time in Singapore will be transformative if you approach them with an open heart and mind. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and never underestimate the impact you can make. You have the potential to learn, grow, and contribute in ways you can't yet imagine.
