GRIP: Media in Seoul (Sponsored by the Kim Center)
Since I stepped foot in Korea, I've had endless energy to explore all the ins and outs of what seems to be a never ending city. Every night after my internship ends, I go out to explore all that Seoul has to offer. One of my favorite experiences so far has been spending an evening by the Han River. Me and my friends in my cohort watched the Banpo Bridge light show while eating ramen, a famous tradition in Korea. Surrounded by city lights, these moments of tranquility remind me of all the beauty life has to offer.
Another highlight has been participating in a K-Pop dance class at the renowned One Million Dance Studio. This studio has been famous on social media and in the dance world and so finally getting to experience it first hand was a dream. Stepping into the studio was both exhilarating and intimidating. The energy, the music, and the sense of community in the class were infectious. The choreographers are incredibly talented and help you learn the routine with ease. Getting to see foreigners and Koreans come together through dance and connecting despite the language barrier was absolutely wonderful.
Korea has a way of capturing your heart with its unique blend of tradition and modernity. The city offers a new adventure at every corner, from palaces and temples nestled amidst skyscrapers to bustling street markets offering mouth watering delicacies. I've fallen in love with the local cuisine – whether it's the comforting taste of kimbap from a convenience store, the spicy kick of tteokbokki from a street stall, or sharing Korean barbecue with my friends, each meal is an experience.
In my free time, I make it a point to try new restaurants, indulge in karaoke sessions, and walk around the city that never sleeps. Each activity, no matter how small, has contributed to my understanding and appreciation of Korean culture. Stepping out of my comfort zone has been a recurring theme during my stay here. Whether it's participating in a spontaneous karaoke session with colleagues or navigating the bustling streets and foreign transit system, each experience has helped me grow and adapt.
It’s been just over one week and my time in Korea has been an incredible journey of cultural exploration, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences. I never realized how fast things move in the “hustle hustle” culture of Seoul. From long days at work to night by the Han River, K-Pop dance classes, every moment has enhanced my stay in this beautiful country. Korea has not only welcomed me with open arms but has also taught me the value of embracing the unknown. As my internship progresses, I look forward to creating more memories and deepening my connection with this amazing place and people I meet along the way.
