GRIP: Engineering Research in Singapore
Stepping into the bustling Maxwell Food Centre in Singapore was like entering a portal to a world of flavors. The air was thick with the aroma of spices, the sizzle of pans, and the chatter of food enthusiasts. Amidst this sensory symphony, I embarked on a culinary journey that would introduce me to the rich tapestry of Singaporean cuisine.
One dish, in particular, stole the spotlight – Hainanese chicken rice. As I took my first bite, the tender chicken and fragrant rice danced on my palate, offering a glimpse into the culinary wonders that awaited me. This was just the beginning of my adventures during my time abroad, participating in the Global Research Internship Program (GRIP) in Singapore.
Singapore, with its unique geography and history, holds the key to its captivating cultural fusion. The Peranakan, Chinese, Malay, and Indian influences intertwine harmoniously, giving birth to a vibrant tapestry of traditions and customs. As I navigated through the colorful streets and vibrant markets, I witnessed this fusion firsthand. From the intricate Peranakan architecture to the bustling Indian and Malay neighborhoods, Singapore was a living testament to the beauty of cultural diversity.
My time in Singapore sparked a personal reflection on my own cultural identity as an Asian American. The city's multicultural atmosphere encouraged me to explore the facets of my heritage and connect with the diverse experiences that people of Asian descent share across the globe. In a way, Singapore became a mirror that allowed me to examine my roots and embrace the multiplicity of my identity.
In a poignant twist of fate, my journey to Asia coincided with my first visit since 2018, a period marked by the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sight of people who resembled me, the shared familiarity of features and gestures, brought a sense of comfort and belonging that I hadn't felt in a long time. It was a reunion with a part of my identity that had been distant, yet deeply ingrained.
As my two-month stay in Singapore drew to a close, I found myself at the iconic Gardens by the Bay, eagerly awaiting the mesmerizing light show. The sky was painted with hues of twilight as the Supertrees came alive in a dance of lights and music. It was a perfect culmination of my journey, a visual spectacle that encapsulated the essence of Singapore's blend of nature and technology.
Looking back, my experiences during the GRIP program in Singapore were nothing short of transformative. From savoring exquisite dishes at Maxwell Food Centre to exploring the city's multifaceted cultural heritage, every moment added to the kaleidoscope of memories I took back with me. Beyond the research and academic endeavors, it was the everyday encounters that left an indelible mark, reminding me of the power of shared experiences and the beauty of connections formed across borders.
As I boarded the plane, the vibrant scenes of Singapore flashed before my eyes—the flavors, the faces, and the light show that brought my journey to a close. The city had not only broadened my horizons academically but had also enriched my soul, fostering a sense of belonging and kinship that transcends borders and cultures. My time in Singapore was more than just an internship; it was a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and reconnection that would stay with me forever.
The Global Research and Internship Program (GRIP) provides outstanding undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to intern or conduct research abroad for 8 to 12 weeks over the summer.
