Reflecting on my experience as an intern at the Kopke Port house in Porto, Portugal, I’m struck by how integral my colleagues have been in shaping this unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, they welcomed me into a professional, friendly, and supportive community, making my transition smooth and enriching.

My Portuguese colleagues at the Kopke winery were especially instrumental in this. Kopke, known for its personalized and intimate approach to wine-making, provided me with a unique opportunity to work closely with a small but highly knowledgeable team. The mentorship I received was without a doubt of the most memorable aspects of my time there. My colleagues at Kopke took the time to teach me the intricacies of the trade, offering both guidance and trust. This sense of personal responsibility they fostered in me accelerated my learning and significantly boosted my confidence. Despite having supervisors who were perhaps not as involved as I had hoped, the support from my coworkers made all the difference. They ensured that I not only had responsibility in my work but also took the time to explore the beautiful surroundings of Porto.

Beyond the work itself, the social aspects of this experience have been equally transformative. Shortly after our GRIP group arrived, our colleagues invited us to join their weekly soccer games, breaking the ice and helping us to integrate quickly into their community. The bonds we formed during these games extended well beyond the field, enriching our time both at work and in our personal lives.

A particularly special memory was when the receptionist of the dorm building, where we were staying, took me and another GRIP student to dinner on two occasions. We ventured out to a traditional Portuguese restaurant in the outskirts of Porto, where we indulged in a long and spectacular dinner, tasting all the classic Portuguese dishes. The food was incredible, and the experience was nothing short of amazing, definitely, a true highlight of my time in Portugal.

The location of my internship was another aspect that continually left me in awe. The picturesque views from the wineries provided a stunning backdrop to my daily work, making even the most routine tasks feel extraordinary. The opportunity to work in such a beautiful setting added a unique layer to my experience, one that I will undoubtedly cherish.

In conclusion, my internship at the Sogevinus wineries has been a transformative journey. My coworkers and fellow GRIP students’ kindness, knowledge, and willingness to include me in both their work and personal lives made this summer experience special. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from such talented and friendly individuals, who have undoubtedly enhanced my personal growth and enjoyment throughout my stay in Porto.
