Dear Past Me: Look at You Now

GRIP: Business in Sydney, Australia
Dear Pre-GRIP Isabella,
You looked at your signed GRIP commitment contract, thinking, “What did I just get myself into?” As you made your travel and internship placement arrangements, you processed that you were actually spending this summer away from home. Not just an Amtrak ride away, but a 22-hour plane ride away.
You had never been this far away from home, especially not alone. You were scared, understandably so. You were entering a whole new territory without your family or friends, not knowing how you’d settle in or get along. But Isabella, you had it all wrong. You had no idea that this summer (winter here in Australia) would change you—for good.

Well for one, you now know that Sydney has more to offer than kangaroos and the Opera House (though seeing both in real life was surreal). You said “yes” to every adventure, which led you to places ranging from the Blue Mountains to some of Sydney’s most iconic beaches! You saw the most breathtaking gems nature has to offer, even if the bin chicken quite literally took your breath away out of fear the first time you saw it.
You would be proud of the way you were able to build a life for yourself these past eight weeks. From learning how to use Sydney’s tap on-and-off public transport system to curating the most delicious meal preps each week, you created a routine that felt like your own. You started to make this city feel like home.
Professionally, you grew more than you could have possibly imagined. You adapted to Australia’s work culture, learned to work globally across time zones and perspectives, and grew comfortable asking questions. You became more proactive, thorough, and confident in your abilities. You were able to contribute meaningfully during your internship, despite being in an unfamiliar space.

More than anything, you found comfort in being alone without feeling lonely. Sometimes you spent days and nights with the friends you made, but at times, you ventured out alone! I know you won’t believe it, I barely do either. However, those solo trips were some of the most special experiences you had in your life. You not only built confidence, but you also learned to enjoy your own company, reflect, and discover what truly speaks to you.
So, pre-GRIP Isabella, you may have started this journey with some anxieties, but you’re soon returning to the US with memories that will last a lifetime. I am so proud of you, and I hope you’ll carry this version of yourself into the rest of uni and beyond.
Lots of love,
Post-GRIP Isabella
