Living Abroad: Adulting 101

GRIP: Nursing Research at Trinity College Dublin

Being abroad has surprised me in many ways, but one of my main takeaways so far is the amount of growth that can happen in an international setting. Penn’s Global Research and Internship program has taught me so many things, even in the first few weeks of being here. When first I landed in Dublin, halfway across the world, I suddenly realized I was on my own. Every decision from thereon out would be driven by me; with a research placement, I was in charge of my own travel, housing, etc. A usually indecisive person who can’t even choose where to get dinner, I was a little bit overwhelmed!

But as the first few days passed, I realized what an amazing opportunity for growth this program is. Living independently, managing budgets, timelines, and trips has been a learning curve, but one I am immensely grateful for. I feel like in the first week I am already so much more aware of expenses; I have started a budget sheet for the summer, weighing costs of groceries, transportations, and deciding what extra expenses I want to invest in. I am more confident with “adult” decisions and managing my own schedule, for instance booking weekend trips and planning every detail from flights, accommodations, and outings.

Even though I am living here on my own, there is no lack of support. Dublin has embraced me so warmly— my bosses, the other program participants, and even random locals I pass on the street are more than happy to help or direct me. A common phrase in Irish is “Céad míle fáilte.” In English, this means “a hundred thousand welcomes,” and it truly represents the culture here in Dublin. Everyone here wants the best for you and will go out of your way to make the experience amazing. The other Penn participants have also been great resource; from post-work meals to weekend pub runs, GRIP has been a fantastic bonding experience for all of us. There are so many communities to get involved with—I am even training with a local soccer (football) team, Shelbourne FC, to prepare for my preseason with Penn Women’s Soccer! Part of living self-sufficiently and adulting is learning how to find your circles and lean on the people around you, and Dublin has been a great example of that.

I have found so much independence here, and am starting to thrive on it. Every day, I get to figure out what I want to do for myself, and make those dreams a reality. I am loving this experience so far, and have so much gratitude to Penn and Trinity for this opportunity.
