The Global Research & Internship Program offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to intern or conduct research with a variety of organizations and companies abroad for 8 to 12 weeks over the summer. In Summer 2022, there are a number of exciting research opportunities in a variety of fields. The deadline to apply for a research placement is January 12, 2022.
Summer 2022 Research Placements

Archaeological Excavation in Armenia
This is a research placement with Dr. Peter J. Cobb, a former Lecturer at the Penn Museum and current Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong. In the summer, Dr. Cobb’s team will explore the southeast part of the Ararat Plain around the town of Vedi in Armenia, searching for new sites that date back thousands of years. The team will spend most days excavating one of these sites, a major 3000-year-old fortress, to uncover the past. Interns assist in all tasks, from digging and recording the objects we collect, to digital mapping and 3D modeling.

Nursing Research in Dublin
This program provides students the opportunity to conduct research with the School of Nursing & Midwifery at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. Penn students who have participated in the program in the past have recommended the placement for students who are curious, independent self-starters, able to ask for help when needed, excited about spending time in a new environment, and looking to develop their research skills.

Engineering Research in Singapore
This program is part of the Summer Engineering Research Internship for U.S. Students (SERIUS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The SERIUS program provides students from specific U.S. partner universities to conduct research at the National University of Singapore (NUS). In addition to developing research skills and finding out what’s at the cutting edge in engineering and technology, students learn from faculty and researchers who are experts in their field in a different culture. Undergraduate SEAS students can apply for up to three projects in the following engineering fields: biomedical, biomolecular, chemical, civil, computer, environmental, electrical, industrial/systems, materials, and mechanical.

Social Science and Humanities Research in Auckland
This program is part of the Northern Hemisphere Summer Research Scholars program at the University of Auckland. Students will be able to apply to up to two projects in the following humanities and social science fields: censorship, classics and feminism/queer studies, conflict and terrorism studies, COVID-related projects, indigenous rights, migration and climate change, political branding, public policy, renaissance studies, and world history.

Engineering Research in Aachen
This program is a research placement with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) International at RWTH Aachen University in Aachen, Germany. UROP International is designed for students from North American universities who wish to gain research experience by conducting research projects at RWTH Aachen University. It takes place during a ten-week research summer school between the middle of May and the end of July. The program consists of three components: a research project at a University research institute or lab; comprehensive and intensive workshops on German, intercultural learning, scientific methods, and research practice; and extracurricular activities that will allow students to learn about German history and culture and meet German and international students.
