Updates to the Study Abroad Application Process

With more students than ever choosing to study abroad, Penn Abroad is introducing key updates to ensure a clear, efficient, and student-centered application process. These changes are designed to help students plan ahead, minimize uncertainty, and maximize their opportunities.

What’s Changing?

Program Specific Application Caps

  • All Penn Abroad programs have a cap on the number of applications opened per advising cycle.
  • The cap on open applications for each program is listed on the “Overview” tab of the PASSPORT program brochure.
  • Once a program reaches its cap, no additional applications will be opened for that program even if the Penn Abroad deadline has not yet passed. Waitlists will not be maintained.

Selection & Backup Options

  • Students may have only one application open at a time. Within the application, you must also select a backup program from an approved list.
  • Opening an application does not guarantee placement. Some programs have fewer available spots than the cap, meaning a selection process will take place.
  • Students not selected for their first-choice program will be automatically rerouted to their backup program if space is available and eligibility requirements are met.
    • Additional academic approval will be required for the backup program.

Earlier Application Timeline

  • September 5 is the final day to request to open a Spring 2026 study abroad application, but students are strongly encouraged to do so much earlier as many programs will meet their application cap before this date.
  • The application deadline for all programs* regardless of location is September 15.
    • *For King’s College London & London School of Economics only, applicants must attend group advising and request to open an application by May 5. The application deadline for these two programs only is May 15.

What Are the Next Steps for Students?

  • Attend Group Advising. This is the required first step before opening an application. To learn more about Group Advising, click here.
  • Request to open an application as early as possible, by September 5 at the latest.
  • Read and follow all application instructions carefully. Submit your application by the deadline listed on the PASSPORT program brochure. Late submissions will not be accepted.
