By Penn Abroad

Building on the successful pilot and continuation of Penn Global Seminars (PGS) under the leadership of Penn Global, Penn Abroad is pleased to announce the program's continued growth in the coming academic year.

Leading the way for new models of global learning, Penn Global Seminars combine intensive semester-long study with a short-term travel component that deepens students' understanding of concepts discussed in the classroom. Since the program began in spring 2016, Penn Abroad has continued the development of these seminars in order to enable students across schools and years to take full advantage of essential global learning opportunities.

The program will grow in the coming 2018-2019 academic year to a total of twelve courses. New and returning faculty leaders have designed seminars that travel to unique locations and offer significant opportunity for cultural exchange and immersion. New destinations include South Africa, Uganda, Ghana, Jamaica, Italy, Iceland and the Czech Republic. Each course has been developed to broaden access to rich global experience for all undergraduates. Two courses, The City of Delhi: New, Old, and Unmapped and South Africa Rising: Past and Present in the New South Africa, will be offered as writing seminars targeting first-year students. Cross-disciplinary courses have also been developed, including Culture, Health, and Development in Ghana, offered by Africana Studies and Penn Nursing, and Robotics and Rehabilitation,  offered by Penn Engineering in partnership with Perelman School of Medicine.

Penn Abroad's commitment to access extends beyond programming and course options. Funding for a significant portion of seminar and travel expenses has been made possible by a generous donation from the Ahmad Fund, as well as contributions from Penn's Global Engagement Fund. The collaborative effort between the undergraduate schools, faculty leaders, and Penn Global allows Penn Abroad to continue its mission to make global opportunities accessible to any Penn student.

Applications for the Fall 2018 semester are open now until April 9th.
