PGS: Cairo as Palimpsest
Hans Bode is a first-year student at the University of Pennsylvania, planning to major in Economics and Global Health. This semester he will be traveling to Cairo, Egypt, with his Penn Global Seminar “Cairo as Palimpsest”, to explore the city’s rich historical layers and cultural transformations over time. On campus, Hans plays violin for the Penn Symphony Orchestra, is involved in The Daily Pennsylvanian’s Multimedia Department, where he captures campus and local events through photography, and Reach’s Unfiltered Committee, where he amplifies student voices through social media. Outside of class, Hans enjoys long runs, learning new pieces on the piano, and heading to the Philadelphia Art Museum and Barnes Foundation. He is passionate about using economic and global health frameworks to analyze disparities in healthcare access.
During his upcoming semester, he is particularly looking forward to….
- Exploring Old Cairo by foot
- Stopping by the Hanging Church, Mosque of Al-Hakim, and Beit El Suhaymi to see how history layers itself in the city
- Attending a lecture at the American University of Cairo and engaging with scholars on architecture and urban transformation
- Visiting the Pyramids of Giza
- Capturing the city through photography
- Sampling traditional Egyptian street food
