Wharton ’28
PGS: Before Netflix: The Past and Present of Latin American Television

Iliana Alvarez Borges is a freshman in the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, where her target language is Spanish. This semester, she will be traveling to Mexico City with her Penn Global Seminar to study Latin American television, focusing on how globalization, digital media, and social movements have shaped the industry.  On campus, Iliana is a member of the Wharton Undergraduate Sports Business Club, the Huntsman Student Advisory Board, and plays intramural soccer. Outside of class, she enjoys going to Pottruck, trying new restaurants with her friends, and journaling about things that inspire her.  In the future, she hopes to have a job that allows her to travel and see the world, and she’s grateful that Penn has so many opportunities to experience and learn through global immersion!

During her trip, she is looking forward to…

  • Shopping at some of Mexico City’s vibrant tianguis (open-air markets)
  • Eating her favorite food—tortas al pastor
  • Traveling to Televisa Studios San Ángel, home to many iconic telenovelas
  • Visiting the Museo Frida Kahlo and learning more about her life and legacy
  • Going to Teotihuacán to explore its ancient pyramids
