Ask me about…
I feel like I had a pretty unique experience that other students can definitely learn from. Firstly, I applied to the program super last-minute, so I had to work very quickly to get all of my application information together and take the French language exam because I had not studied French at Penn. I ran into so many headaches and issues along the way so I would be happy to provide others with help and guidance through the application process.
My experience was also interesting because of my limited French language ability in speaking. I had to do a lot of catching up on my own over the summer and while in Paris in order to learn enough to get by. I was initially struggling to communicate in French without being automatically responded to in English, but over time I was able do well in my French course and get to a level where I could communicate effectively.
My Experience Abroad:
My experience abroad at Sciences Po greatly complemented my major and academic goals. Because Sciences Po is a university solely focused on political science and economics, the classes offered were a perfect fit for my PPE major. There were so many interesting course offerings, and due to the flexible nature of the program I was able to take any classes that interested me and made them work for my major. I really appreciated being able to be exposed to new topics and global perspectives that I couldn’t get anywhere else. Being in an environment surrounded by international and French students all with a shared interest in politics provided a great experience. I also think the abroad experience helped open my eyes to more career paths that exist within the world of politics and economics.
Other Highlights:
- Music performances in Paris: as a music lover, I really appreciated how accessible music is for everyone. I got to see two operas, several concerts and even a jazz festival I went to with my French professor.
- French food: the food in Paris is delicious and relatively affordable. I loved visiting the boulangerie every day to pick up a fresh baguette, sandwiches and dessert.
- Sightseeing around the city: Initially, I made my schedule as filled as possible, trying to visit every single museum, landmark and attraction possible in Paris. Eventually, I learned to slow down and appreciate things as they come to you. But still, my point remains that there is so much to do and see in Paris. I never felt bored and stepping outside and just seeing the beauty and history of the city always felt inspiring.
