GRIP: Power Up Gambia

Madison Shelton is a College of Arts and Sciences junior studying Medical Anthropology and Global Health with minors in Chemistry and French. During the summer, she is in Bwiam, The Gambia, working as a Hospital Intern through the Global Research and Internship Program (GRIP) at Penn. From Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she is thrilled to be traveling abroad to Africa for the first time, a lifelong dream of hers. During her time on campus, she is on the board of the Asian Pacific Indigenous Athlete Coalition, a big with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and is on the Penn Women’s Rowing team. In her free time, she enjoys watching documentaries, exploring new hidden gems in the city, and going to the zoo.  

She is particularly excited about…  

  • Learning about the healthcare field in rural areas 
  • Exploring The Gambia and its rich culture 
  • Taking a weekend trip to Senegal and practicing french  
  • Visiting Kunta Kinteh Island
