PGS: Bicycles: The Mechanical Advantage
Max Huang is a sophomore from Montreal, Canada, pursuing degrees in Physics and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. This semester, he will be traveling to Amsterdam with his Penn Global Seminar to delve into the history, evolution and impact of bicycles on society and the environment.
On campus, Max is a member of the Vagelos Integrated Program in Energy Research (VIPER) and is passionate about tackling climate change through innovative energy technologies. As a research assistant in Dr. Vojvodic’s lab, he focuses on computational catalyst design to enhance green hydrogen production. In addition to his research, Max serves as a peer advisor in both the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, is the social chair of the VIPER Student Board, and competes for Penn on the Division 1 Ultimate Frisbee team.
During his upcoming semester, he is particularly looking forward to…
- Cycling with classmates through the Dutch countryside
- Getting hands-on bicycle engineering experience at the Delft University of Technology
- Going on morning runs through Vondelpark and along Amsterdam’s canals
- Visiting the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum to learn about Dutch art and history
- Diving into the local food scene (and tasting a freshly made stroopwafel)
