PGS: Global Radiation History: Living in the Atomic Age 1945-Present

Nuha Abuali is a junior majoring in Sociology with a minor in Legal Studies on the pre-law track. This semester, she’s traveling to Hiroshima and Tokyo with her Penn Global Seminar to examine the development of nuclear weapons and energy post-1945, with a focus on the human consequences of radiation exposure and the enduring effects on atomic bomb survivors.

On campus, Nuha is heavily involved in legal and public policy advocacy. She directs the Political Affairs Committee for a Penn healthcare equity organization called Reproductive Justice, serves as an editor for the Penn Black Pre-Law Journal, and interns at the Philadelphia Legal Assistance Center. Outside of academics, she loves taking pictures of her cat, Mochi, reading mystery novels, and going on boba runs with friends. She hopes to specialize in international law and use her future law degree to advocate for human rights both in the U.S. and globally.

During her upcoming trip, she is particularly looking forward to…

  • Hearing the stories Atomic bomb survivors’ first hand
  • Visiting Okunoshima (and seeing all the rabbits!)
  • Touring the Lucky Dragon Museum
  • Taking the Shinkansen train from Hiroshima to Tokyo
  • Visiting the Social Book Café
  • Experiencing amazing Japanese food and scenery
