PGS: Disability Rights and Oppression: Experiences within Global Deaf Communities

Tasmiah (Taz) Haque is sophomore in the College studying Economics with a minor in Linguistics. On campus, Taz is a Penn Abroad Leader for the Penn Abroad team, where she serves as an ambassador for Penn’s global programs. She is also a Writing Fellow at the Marks Family Writing Center, where she tutors her peers and supports them with any of their writing needs. Beyond her academics and extracurriculars, Taz enjoys cooking for her friends, going to the gym, and working as a hostess at the New Deck Tavern. This spring, Taz will be visiting Italy through her PGS course titled “Disability Rights and Oppression: Experiences within Global Deaf Communities.” She will be interacting with Deaf communities in Italy to learn more about their experiences as an underrepresented group and their struggles to gain national recognition of their sign language.

For her upcoming trip to Italy, Taz is especially looking forward to:

  • Exploring historic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain
  • Visiting local Italian Deaf-owned businesses and meeting with Deaf entrepreneurs
  • Taking a stroll through the Botanical Gardens in Trastevere
  • Eating as much Italian cuisine as she can at every restaurant she finds
