PGS: Mongolian Civilization: Nomadic and Sedentary

Will Kelly is a junior majoring in English with minors in Economics and Urban Real Estate and Development. This semester, he will be traveling to Mongolia with his Penn Global Seminar to further an education in the development of Mongolian society, both sedentary and nomadic, over time. On campus, Will has experience as a columnist for the DP, serves as a member of the Wharton Investment & Trading Group’s Real Estate team, and plays on the varsity men’s soccer team. Outside of class, he enjoys ranking books on Goodreads, hiking national parks, and spending time with friends. He is passionate about literature and the Buffalo Bills. 

During his upcoming semester, he is particularly looking forward to… 

  • Visiting the ancient city of Kharkhorin, the seat of Chinggis Khan’s Mongol Empire
  • Staying with a nomadic family and learning how to set up a ger (a traditional Mongolian home)
  • Discovering Mongolia’s many animals and wildlife, such as sheep, goats, cattle, Bankhar dogs, and Przewalski’s horses!
  • Admiring Mongolia’s rich natural landscape, such as Ugii lake and Hustai National Park
  • Exploring historic landmarks like Bogd Khan’s Winter Palace and Gandan monastery
