PGS: Palermo: Empires, Migrations, and Mafia

Victoria Konyk is a sophomore nursing student with a minor in Global Health and Nutrition. For the upcoming spring break, she will be traveling to Palermo, Italy, with the Penn Global Seminar, Palermo: Empires, Mafia, and Migration. Being a first-generation American, she is excited to learn more about migration and talk with individuals in the migrant communities of Palermo. Currently, she is an active member of Student Nurses at Penn, Alpha Iota Gamma, and the Ukrainian Student Association at Penn. In her free time, she enjoys trying new restaurants with friends, exploring and relaxing outdoors, and rewatching old Disney Channel original movies, like Princess Protection Program. She is incredibly excited for a trip full of warm Sicilian air, diverse cultural influences, and exploring museums and historical sites.

During her upcoming trip, she is particularly looking forward to…

  • Exploring the markets and trying the culturally diverse foods of Palermo!
  • Practicing her Italian language skills.
  • Exploring the flora and fauna of Sicily while hiking.
  • Interacting with the Ukrainian migrant community within Palermo and learning more about their experiences as immigrants to Italy.
  • Creating new friendships with her classmates!
