Ask me about...
What made this experience unique was navigating a new environment without the immediate support of family and friends, which pushed me to adapt quickly and become more self-reliant. In Madrid, every aspect of daily life was an opportunity for growth. From ordering meals in Spanish to mastering the public transportation system, I learned to handle various situations with confidence. While it was challenging to face language barriers, I ultimately improved my communication skills and increased my appreciation for the local culture.
Academically, taking classes in a different language was initially daunting, but it significantly improved my language proficiency. The challenge of understanding materials and completing assignments in Spanish required me to invest additional time and effort in comprehending course content. However, these courses ultimately sharpened my language skills and deepened my comprehension. The educational system in Spain also emphasized different approaches to learning, which broadened my academic outlook. For example, Comillas Pontifical University focuses on presentations and group projects more than written exams, encouraging active participation and collaborative learning. This emphasis on verbal communication helped me become more articulate and confident in expressing my ideas in Spanish.
My Experience Abroad:
Studying abroad in Spain was relevant to my Hispanic Studies minor. Immersing myself in Spanish culture and language provided an opportunity to deepen my understanding of Hispanic literature, history, and social dynamics, which are core components of my coursework. Living and studying in Madrid allowed me to experience firsthand the cultural contexts discussed in my classes. I visited historical sites, museums, and cultural landmarks, such as the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Prado Museum, and Plaza Mayor. These experiences enriched my knowledge of Spain’s rich heritage and contemporary society, enhancing my classroom learning and bringing theoretical concepts to life. Additionally, traveling to other significant cities like Granada, Seville, and Córdoba allowed me to explore important landmarks such as the Alhambra, the Royal Alcázar, and the Mosque-Cathedral. These excursions provided a broader perspective on Spain’s diverse regional histories and cultural influences, further enriching my academic experience. This engagement with historical and cultural sites allowed me to connect more deeply with my studies and gain a comprehensive understanding of the material.
