Dear International Students and Scholars,
It is with great joy and heartfelt excitement that I welcome you to Penn and to International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). As someone who once arrived in the U.S. as an international student, I know firsthand the mix of emotions you may be feeling—the thrill of new opportunities, the curiosity of immersing yourself in a different culture, and the uncertainties that come with navigating an unfamiliar environment. Please know that you are not alone. You are now part of a vibrant, supportive, and truly global community that is here to uplift you every step of the way.
At ISSS, we are more than just a resource for immigration services—we are your home away from home. Our dedicated team is here to provide expert guidance, meaningful programs, and unwavering support throughout your time at Penn and beyond. Whether you need assistance with visa matters, employment authorization, cultural adjustment, or simply a space to connect with others who share your journey, we are always here to listen, guide, and walk alongside you. We encourage you to engage with us through in-person advising, phone and email consultations, integration programs, social media, and our website.
Beyond providing essential services, we are deeply committed to making international education a campus-wide and national priority. ISSS collaborates with the Penn community to create impactful initiatives that empower you, amplify your voice, and ensure you feel truly seen and heard. Programs such as the International Student Advisory Board (ISAB), International Student Table for Advocacy & Relations (ISTAR), International Partners Outreach Group (IPOG), Building International Students Integration Group (BISIG), and Penn Annual Roundtable with Stakeholders (PARTS) are designed to foster leadership, advocacy, and a strong sense of belonging.
More than anything, my greatest desire is to cultivate a community where cultures are not only welcomed but celebrated—a space where every individual, regardless of background, feels valued, respected, and empowered to share their story. Through programs such as the Intercultural Leadership Program (ILP), Penn Global Mosaic (PGM), Forerunner, iCommunicate, Penn World Scholars (PWS), and Brunch with Dr. Rudie, we encourage open and respectful dialogue, cross-cultural friendships, and a deeper understanding of one another. These initiatives are built on the belief that true belonging is created when we listen, learn, and grow together.
As you begin this exciting new chapter, know that ISSS is more than just an office—we are a family, and you are an essential part of it. My door is always open, and I encourage you to share your ideas, experiences, and aspirations with us. Together, we will make your time at Penn an unforgettable and enriching journey.
Once again, welcome to Penn! I look forward to meeting you, hearing your stories, and celebrating the incredible uniqueness and talent that you bring to our community.
With warmest regards,
