Please remember that when re-entering the U.S. in valid H-1B status, you must present the following documents to the CBP Officer at the U.S. Border:

  1. Valid passport;
  2. Valid H-1B visa;
  3. Original valid Form I-797 H-1B Approval Notice
  4. 2-3 most recent pay stubs or letter from supervisor confirming continued employment
  5. Copy of I-129 Petition

If there are changes to US re-entry policies which may possibly occur during a change in administration, we will provide updates as needed. To avoid any unexpected issues, we advise returning prior to the presidential inauguration on 1/20/2025.

It is also possible that your electronic devices may be searched at the US Border. Any compromising information may be used as a reason to deny entry.

Keeping this in mind before traveling, you should confirm the following:

Will your H-1B Visa be valid upon re-entry? If you need to apply for a new visa to return to the U.S.:

  • We recommend you secure an appointment prior to your travel to avoid delays.
  • Unforeseen issues with the visa appointment and/or issuance may impact your timely return to the U.S.
  • We advise caution and to consult with your ISSS Advisor.

After your return, you will need to download your new I-94 Admission Record and confirm your H-1B Expiration Date has not been altered. This I-94 should be uploaded to your iPenn account. If you notice ANY changes to your H-1B on the I-94 or have any questions after returning, please contact your ISSS as soon as possible.

In addition, please be aware of potential scams targeting the international community and review these safety guidelines from Penn's Division of Public Safety.

If you have any questions or concerns after reading, please consult our travel page or contact your ISSS Advisor by email (see iPenn for your advisor’s name and contact information).
