F-1 STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) – iPenn Request

Submit STEM Extension Request Form in iPenn

1. Log In with your PennKey

Find “STEM OPT Extension Request” under Student Services in the left menu.

2. Complete the Request

Upload a completed Form I-983 and pay the $205 Penn Internal Processing Fee.

3. Processing Time

ISSS will notify you within 3-5 business days that your new STEM OPT I-20 is ready with an email confirmation carrying an attached I-20. Note that processing may take longer during peak periods.

When To Apply?

Eligibility

If you are currently on post-completion OPT and applying for STEM OPT. In addition, you are working at least 20 hours/week in a paid position for an E-Verify employer.

Timing

File your STEM OPT application up to 90 days before your current OPT end date. Ensure USCIS receives your application before your current OPT period ends and within 60 days of ISSS issuing your OPT I-20. 

Processing Times

Check the USCIS website for current processing times. Generally, OPT applications take about three months to be approved.

Fee Payment

After submitting the eForm in iPenn, pay the Penn Internal Processing Fee.

Address & Address Changes

  • Avoid changing the address on Form I-765 while OPT is pending.
  • Use a reliable address for mail receipt, including “c/o” if necessary. Update your mailing address with USCIS before submitting application, not just with USPS.
  • Avoid changes to address on form I-765 while application is pending. If using another person’s address, have your name, address and include “c/o” with the persons name.
  • Submit your mailing address changes here.

Cancellation

Notify an ISSS advisor immediately if you decide not to file your OPT application to avoid future issues.

Request for Evidence (RFE)

Consult an ISSS advisor if you receive an RFE.

OPT Termination

Your OPT will terminate if you begin study at another educational level or transfer schools.

EAD Card Errors

Inform ISSS of any errors on your OPT EAD card for assistance with corrections.

Status Changes

Inform ISSS immediately of any immigration status changes via the STEM OPT reporting eform in iPenn..
