COVID-19 Related Travel Restrictions Lifted as of May 10th, 2022
In August 2021, Penn’s Committee on International Travel Risk Assessment (CITRA) removed all travel restrictions for faculty and staff on Penn-affiliated trips. As of May 10th, 2022, CITRA will continue with the next phase of this careful, but deliberate return to Penn’s international activities, by removing all COVID-19 related restrictions on student travel.
Travelers may still require internal approval to travel from their departments, Schools/Centers, and budget leaders. Individual travelers will also be personally responsible for understanding the complex border restrictions and entry requirements of their individual itinerary.
Although COVID-19 related restrictions will be lifted, the pandemic continues to disrupt international travel. Please review these tips and be prepared in the event you test positive for COVID-19 while abroad.
Penn Global and the Office of Risk Management & Insurance will continue to provide guidance and consultation to the Penn community specific to:
- COVID-19 travel restrictions and health screenings abroad
- COVID-19 testing requirements to re-enter the U.S. and recovery documentation
- COVID-19 testing and vaccination availability abroad
- Quarantine and isolation requirements abroad
- Group travel recommendations and trip leader training
- Penn’s international travel insurance, including quarantine delay and cancellation insurance
- Emergency procedures and 24/7 incident support
As a reminder, faculty, staff and students are required to register Penn-affiliated international trips in MyTrips. This mandate is permanent (not COVID related) and was made official on October 12th, 2021. Registration in MyTrips provides immediate access to Penn’s comprehensive travel assistance program, including 24/7 medical and security advice, travel medical insurance, evacuation and repatriation insurance and emergency response resources.
Penn will return to pre-pandemic international travel guidance, which imposes restrictions on undergraduate student travel to heightened risk regions based primarily on safety and security risk. Undergraduate students must submit a petition to CITRA for travel to regions rated “high” or “extreme” risk as defined by International SOS. Note: International SOS rates regions within a country, not necessarily the entire country.
More information on the undergraduate travel guidelines and petition process can be found here.
