This qualitative study seeks to understand the specific educational needs of refugee students in New York City Schools. The first phase of the study examines which school institutional factors best facilitate refugee/asylee youth’s academic achievement. This second phase of the study (pending funding) will explore the ways in which both secular and faith based organization involved with refugee resettlement, as well as faith-based institutional spaces (such as churches and mosques) provide educational support to refugee and asylee children and youth. Together, the findings from this two-pronged study will yield important insights regarding how to improve schooling for vulnerable populations.
