Fund Priorities

Penn's India Research and Engagement Fund (IREF) catalyzes and supports projects and initiatives that:

  • Advance the interdisciplinary study, teaching, and engagement of India and position Penn as a key source of knowledge and ideas on India-related issues, topics, and challenges.

  • Strengthens relationships between the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India in New Delhi (UPIASI) and the greater Penn community. 

Impact
  • 28 Total number of grants supporting projects across disciplines.
  • 20 Number of Penn faculty engaged with primary affiliations with 7 of Penn's 12 Schools.

Explore Current & Past Projects

Established in 2017, Penn's India Research and Engagement Fund has provided support to Penn faculty research and capacity-building initiatives that address key issues, including road traffic accident injury response, interconnection of computing devices, the transformation of India's nalas, household air pollution, and migrant labor trends.

ABC Stop the Bleed
Featured IREF Project
"A-B-C Stop The Bleed"

PSOM Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Vinay Nadkarni’s "ABC-Stop the Bleed” Indo-US Road Traffic Accident and Injury Response Program aims to train first responders to “Stop the Bleed” with simple techniques and equipment. The program has already trained over 1000 first responders to provide better care to traffic accident victims, saving at least 30 lives.
