Program:
-
PGS: Health and the Healthcare System in Chile
Ask me about...
-
Getting to practice my Spanish skills while in Chile due to locals having limited English proficiency.
-
Engaging in cultural immersion and exploring a foreign country outside of allotted educational time.
My Experience Abroad:
I am interested in becoming a physician, especially in environmental health and global health. Our visits to public and private clinics provided insight into the shortcomings and advantages of a public healthcare system. I was able to compare and contrast Chile's healthcare challenges with the US after speaking with nurses, doctors, and students in Chile. I completed a research project while in Chile regarding air pollution and lung health, one of my research interests.
Other Highlights:
-
Celebrating New Year's in the central square of Valparaiso, dancing to Chilean Cumbia and watching fireworks
-
Eating a delicious traditional Chilean lunch at a countryside eatery after a hike in Rio Clarillo National Park
-
Touring a Chilean vineyard and its beautiful gardens
-
Developing friendships with University Los Andes students and spending time with them outside of educational programming
-
Speaking with nurses in San Borgia public hospital
