Program Abroad:

  • Semester Abroad (SA): CIEE Monteverde, Costa Rica

Ask me about...

  • My unique program. My program was unique in that I was not studying at a university, but rather with a small group of students who were all taking the exact same classes as I was. We traveled around the country a lot as part of the program as well, which was my favorite aspect of it, and something that I don't think I would've gotten with most other programs.

My Experience Abroad:

As an environmental science student, Costa Rica is one of the best places to learn about both ecology and sustainability. Not only is the country a home for 4% of the world's biodiversity, but the government and the people have also made incredible strides to protect it through efforts such as their commitment to having 99% of their electricity come from renewable sources. In addition to my major, this program enhanced my study of Spanish by giving me an immersive experience through a one-month homestay in the middle of the semester!

Other Highlights:

  • Watching a leatherback sea turtle cover over her nest and go back to the ocean was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen in my entire life.

  • Going snorkeling for three days in Panama and seeing everything from stingrays to puffer fish to upside-down jellyfish.

  • Seeing a tapir walk right by the spot we were eating dinner.

  • Presenting my research on hummingbird feeding behavior to the rest of my program, and hearing about all of their independent research projects.
