My Experience Abroad:
I study International Relations and East Asian Area Studies, so studying abroad in an East Asian country was an obvious choice for me. I decided to split my year abroad between South Korea and Japan because I am specifically interested in the relationship between these two countries. By studying directly in both of these countries, I was able to gain a more nuanced understanding of their histories and cultures.
Other Highlights:
-
Reconnecting with an exchange student who studied abroad at Penn (this was in South Korea, and she played a big role in convincing me to study abroad in Korea)
-
Baking with my host family in Japan
-
Going to the Wakakusa Yamayaki festival in Nara, where they burned a mountain
-
Attending concerts and making new friends at these concerts (on both my GRIP program in Paris and my study abroad in South Korea)
-
Taking my first solo trip (traveled to Brussels and Amsterdam for a weekend during my GRIP program)
