SA: ICCS in Rome

Program Abroad:

  • Semester Abroad (SA): Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome

Ask me about...

  • Having never studied Italian before so when I landed in Italy I didn’t know the language at all. Please ask about how I navigated that transition!

  • Studying abroad as a senior!

  • Researching abroad for my senior thesis!

  • Playing volleyball or how to find your extracurriculars outside of the classroom!

  • Being a woman of color abroad!

My Experience Abroad:

This program is centered on engaging with the legacy of the ancient Romans and contextualizing their world in the contemporary city of Rome. Having this learning experience based in Rome added depth to the coursework that enriched my comprehension. This was a completely new type of learning experience for me. We were constantly interacting with the physical material and working in teams to develop relationships and analyze archeological evidence. Every aspect of the program is geared towards defining your observation skills and giving you opportunities to bridge the facts you read with the physical remnants of history you see. These kinds of skill-sets will serve you well in museum studies, archeological excavations, conservation efforts and so much more. These are exactly the kind of opportunities both academically and professionally I am seeking!

Other Highlights:

  • I can check living in another country off of my list of life’s goals.

  • I explored both northern and southern Italy visiting over a dozen cities.

  • I helped conserve floor mosaics in Emperor Nero’s summer villa and swam in the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
