Ezekiel J Emanuel headshotEzekiel J. Emanuel is Vice Provost for Global Initiatives and chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. From January 2009 to January 2011, he served as special advisor for health policy to the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Since 1997 he was chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health and a breast oncologist. Dr. Emanuel received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and his Ph.D. in political philosophy from Harvard University. After completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital and his oncology fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, he joined the faculty at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He has since been a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, UCLA, the Brin Professor at Johns Hopkins Medical School, and the Kovitz Professor at Stanford Medical School and visiting professor at New York University Law School. Dr. Emanuel has written and edited 9 books and over 200 scientific articles. He is a columnist for the New York Times.

Jonathan D Moreno  headshotJonathan D. Moreno is the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania where he is a Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) professor. At Penn he is also Professor of Medical Ethics and Health Policy, of History and Sociology of Science, and of Philosophy.

In 2008-09 he served as a member of President Barack Obama’s transition team.  His work has been cited by Al Gore and was used in the development of the screenplay for “The Bourne Legacy.”  His online neuroethics course drew more than 36,000 registrants in fall 2013.  The American Journal of Bioethics has called him “the quietly most interesting bioethicist of our time.”

His next book, Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die: Bioethics and the Transformation of Healthcare in America, co-authored with Penn president Amy Gutmann, will be published by Liveright/Norton in 2019.  In 2020 Columbia University Press will publish The Brain in Context: A Pragmatic Guide to Neuroscience, written with neuroscientist Jay Schulkin.

Moreno frequently contributes to such publications as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, ScienceNature, Slate, Foreign Affairs, Axios.com, The Huffington Post,and Psychology Today. He often appears on broadcast and online media and was a columnist for ABCNews.com.

Moreno received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Washington University in St. Louis, was an Andrew W. Mellon post-doctoral fellow, holds an honorary doctorate from Hofstra University, and is a recipient of the College of William and Mary Law School Benjamin Rush Medal, the Dr. Jean Mayer Award for Global Citizenship from Tufts University, and the Penn Alumni Faculty Award of Merit. He holds the honorary Visiting Professorship in History at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England.

In 2018 the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
