Former President of Mexico Felipe Calderón will discuss the imperative of tackling climate change while maximizing economic benefits.
Felipe Calderón served as president of Mexico from 2006 to 2012. Prior to his presidency, Calderón was Secretary of Energy (and in that capacity Chairman of the Board of PEMEX and CFE) and director of BANOBRAS (Public Works Bank). He was also a Congressman, leader of the National Action Party (PAN) in the Congress, and Secretary General and National President of PAN. Today, the former president is a Distinguished Perry World House Global Leader On-Residence, chair of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, as well as honorary chair of the Green Growth Action Alliance, president of the Sustainable Human Development Foundation, and a member of the World Resources Institute's board of directors. While at Perry World House, Calderón will take part in programming across the University on the future of trade, U.S.-Mexican relations, and Mexico in the global order, while also working with a Penn research assistant on a new paper.
Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN is the Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Co-Director of the School's WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership. Villarruel also holds an appointment as Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics, University of Pennsylvania. As a bilingual and bicultural nurse researcher, Dr. Villarruel has extensive research and practice experience with diverse Latino and Mexican populations, and health promotion and health disparities. She incorporates a community-based participatory approach and has been the PI/Co-PI of over eight randomized clinical trials on reducing high-risk behaviors in teens. She developed one such program to reduce sexual risk behavior among Latino youth ‚ entitled ¡Cuídate! which was disseminated nationally. Villarruel earned her BSN from Nazareth College, an MSN from the University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in nursing from Wayne State University.
Angela Pachon is the Research Director of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. Angela comes to the Kleinman Center with over 10 years of international experience as a regulatory economist. From 2006-2012, Angela was a policy advisor to the Ontario Energy Board where she participated in the development of regulatory initiatives for gas and electricity utilities. Prior to that, she served as an analyst and consultant at NERA Economic Consulting in London, England, where she also received her Master of Science in Local Economic Development from the London School of Economics. Angela’s B.S. degree is from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogota, Colombia.

Penn in Latin America and Caribbean Initiative
In the fall of 2014, the School of Nursing, under the newly appointed Dean, Dr. Antonia Villarruel, reached out to representatives from Schools across the Penn campus to gauge interest in forming the Penn in Latin America and the Caribbean group. The strong positive response led to a meeting on December 15, 2014. More than 60 individuals from eight Penn Schools, the Perry World House, Penn Global, the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia were in attendance. In the years since, the University of Pennsylvania, led by an interdisciplinary team from across campus, hosts an annual "PLAC" conference to showcase the depth and breadth of institutional and faculty engagement in the region.
